Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, created National Mutt Day back in 2005.
It is celebrated on July 31st and December 2nd every year!
These two days raise awareness of the extremity of mixed breed dogs within shelters. Approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds.
Did you know that mixed breed dogs often exhibit hybrid vigor, which can lead to a healthier and longer life. They can do the same duties as purebred dogs including search and rescue, serving the blind, and searching for drugs.
There are many ways to help spread the awareness:
Visit your local shelter and find a new companion! If you are not able to adopt, you can always donate food, money, supplies needed at your local shelter.
Recently, fashion photographer, Richard Phibbs, published a book called Rescue Me, and all his proceeds go to support the work of the Humane Society of NY.
You can help support buy purchasing the book, which holds very heartwarming stories and pictures of adorable canines who were rescued!
